Lizzie Cooksey is a teaching artist from Louisville, Kentucky. She holds two degrees in music performance, a Bachelor of Music Performance Degree from Indiana University’s Jacobs School of Music and a Master of Music Performance Degree from the University of Louisville’s School of Music.
Ms. Cooksey currently has a private studio with students from ages 10-65 and has experience teaching in the public school system at all Shelby County Public Schools from 2022-2023. Ms. Cooksey was the Professor of Horn at Campbellsville University’s School of Music in 2023 where she enjoyed teaching the Campbellsville University Horn Studio and performing with the Faculty Brass Quintet. Ms. Cooksey is a composer and arranger with her music performed by a variety of musical groups, namely the Campbellsville Faculty Brass Quintet, the UofL Horn Quartet, and the Bourbon & Brass Company.
Lizzie enjoys performing with a variety of chamber groups, wind ensembles, and orchestras, including the Louisville Orchestra, local orchestras and brass groups, and the Bourbon & Brass Company, of which she was a founding member. She has traveled to perform at many different locations in the US and abroad. Lizzie has performed at the Rafael Mendez Brass Institute in 2022, the International Women’s Brass Conference in 2022, the Berlin Opera Academy in 2022 (Berlin, Germany), and the Saluzzo Opera Academy in 2021(Saluzzo, Italy). Lizzie studied abroad in Vienna in 2018 where she worked with Franz Söllner (former hornist of Vienna Philharmonic/Staatsoper). Lizzie Cooksey was the 2021 winner of the MTNA Young Artist Brass Competition for the state of Kentucky.
Ms. Cooksey believes that as a performer, you should always program works that the audience can relate to and see a part of themselves in. She is a supporter of new music and diverse composers. Ms. Cooksey is a member of the American Federation of Musicians (local #11-637). Lizzie is working toward her Doctoral Degree in Horn Performance at the Jacobs School of Music where she studies with Denise Tryon and serves as the Associate Instructor of Horn for the IU Horn Studio and Brass Department. Some of her most influential teachers include Jeff Nelsen, Richard Seraphinoff, Bruce Heim, and Franz Söllner.
